This is standard issue at my house on Sunday mornings. Make with lots of Grand Marnier if the kids are running around too much. I’m kidding. Not really.

2 large eggs

1 cup half-and-half

½ cup whole milk

3 tablespoons Grand Marnier

1 teaspoon grated orange zest

⅛ teaspoon grated nutmeg

4 1-inch-thick slices French or Italian bread

2 tablespoons (¼ stick) unsalted butter

Maple syrup and fresh fruit, for serving

Preheat the oven (with the oven rack in the middle) to 375°F.

In a baking dish large enough to hold the bread slices in a single layer, whisk the eggs. Then whisk in the half-and-half, milk, Grand Marnier, orange zest, and nutmeg. Add the bread and let it soak, turning halfway through, for 5 minutes.

In a large ovenproof skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the soaked bread slices to the skillet, shaking off any extra batter before you do. Let the slices cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until the undersides are golden brown. Flip, cook for 1 minute more, then transfer to the oven. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until golden brown, puffed, and crisp around the edges. Serve with syrup and fresh fruit.
